WHAT ARE YOU COMMITTED TO?
For my first blog post, I wanted to talk about commitment. It was a real test of my own commitment to even get this post launched. Was it scary? Yes. Am I committed? Def. The universe is constantly testing our commitment to our commitments. (So. Much. Commitment.) We say we’re committed to something, but then we feel stuck because our actions aren’t in line with that commitment. I said I was committed to starting a blog, but never carved out time to write. We say we’re committed to taking care of ourselves, then crush takeout and watch Netflix ‘till 2am on a school night. We say we’re committed to change, yet hit the snooze button, rather than waking up earlier.
So if you’re feeling stuck somewhere in your life, what are you really committed to?
What’s your relationship with commitment?
Are you an all-in or nothing person? Are you a one-foot-in and one-foot-out type? Are you a straight up commitment-phobe? I’ve danced with all three of these commitment identities, and truthfully, commitment is a constant practice for me. CONSTANT.
Are you having a commitment crisis?
In my teens, I couldn’t commit to a hobby. One year I was a cheerleader and flag twirler (true story), and the next I was on an all men’s basketball team, straight crushing it.
In my 20s, I couldn’t commit to a career. At one point I was a bartender, event planner, writer, and yoga instructor, all simultaneously. Let’s be real, the only thing I was really committed to was being lost.
And now, in my 30s, I find it challenging to commit to self-care. I get too caught up in the distractions and bad habits of self-sabotage, as uncomfortable as it may become. Just the other day I skipped a yoga class because I convinced myself it was more important to binge watch the entire season (!!) of Making a Murderer, before the spoilers came out. So not only did I skip exercise, I stayed up way too late and had zero energy to do anything the next day. We must commit to taking care of ourselves, to prevent feeling like a deflated human.
Are you committed to change?
We’re constantly sending mixed messages of what we’re actually committing to. Recently I moved to London and navigating the uncertainties of a new city and culture, again, tested my REALLY having to commit.
I made the commitment to leave everything behind in New York City and move to London with my husband for a new adventure. I was all in. So, I thought.
Once I moved, all the uncertainty of being in a new place set in. I wasn’t sure how long we were going to stay, what I wanted to do, or if I’d even like it. So, I put one foot in and kept one foot out. In that time, I met a lot of new people, and many new collaboration opportunities showed up, but none of them seemed to stick. I felt STUCK. I became frustrated, even angry at times, wondering why nothing was working out? TRUTH BOMB, I wasn’t fully committed. My storyline was, “If I don’t fully commit, then I won’t have to take responsibility for anything that fails.”
So, I made it my mission to put both feet into London and give it my all. Guess what? Doors started to open and new opportunities began to move forward. Our apartment back in NYC even got rented once I fully committed to my new life in London.
Are you in, or are you out?
The universe takes commitment very seriously. When you think about what you want to commit to (for me, it was writing more and making a big move) ask yourself: are you in, or are you out? Having only one foot in isn’t serving anyone.
What would happen if you committed right now?
I’ve talked about starting a blog for years, but never committed. So, I thought it was only appropriate to discuss the topic of commitment as my first post. Truth is, I’m committed to offering nuggets of insight I’ve learned from my trainings, teachers, and experience to support your growth as an awakened soul living a beautiful, exciting, messy, complicated human experience.
Whatever you feel called to commit to right now, try it with two feet in, whole-heart open. If I can challenge you to commit to one thing, it is this.
